Think
about the area you want to cover and consider:
- Use
- Is it a high-traffic or low-traffic area?
- Is it used everyday or occasionally?
- Is it used by adults, children and/or
pets?
- Is food allowed?
- Color
- What effect do you want color to have
on the area?
- What colors are in the furniture upholstery,
room decorations, and adjoining rugs?
- Budget
- Is there an amount that you want to spend?
Carpeting 101
Carpeting is made of wool or synthetic yarn
that is sewn through a backing of canvas or other
material. There are 4 aspects of carpeting that
are used to distinguish one type from another.
They are fiber, pile, density, and texture.
Fiber — the
carpet material itself; wool, nylon, acrylic,
olefin, and polyester. Single fibers are spun
together to create two, three or four-ply yarn,
which is then attached to a woven backing.
Pile — the height
of the fiber.
Density — the amount of fiber tufts per square
inch. Higher density improves comfort and performance.
Carpet weight is measured in ounces per square
yard; more ounces per square yard is better.
When using weight to compare carpets, make sure
you compare like materials (ex: nylon to nylon,
not nylon to polyester).
Texture — the style in which fibers are looped,
twisted or cut.
